Happy 80th Anniversary to the Vermont Country Store!

Hi, Friends! Everyone’s favorite country store is turning 80! The Vermont Country Store will celebrate its 80th anniversary at the inaugural Weston Village Fair & Jubilee this Saturday, September 12, a new community event featuring old-fashioned food, fun, and games for the whole family, with proceeds to benefit the Weston Community Association.

I remember the first time I visited the Vermont Country Store in Weston in early September 2014. It was shortly after my family and I moved to Southern Vermont from Brooklyn, NY to start a new life. My son hadn’t yet turned two years old and he was, of course, interested in the myriad number of super cool, old-fashioned toys they carried. My husband and I were soaking in all the radiance of the fall season in the region we now call “home.” It felt like the quintessential Vermont experience. It also felt like the warmest welcome. We still have the play accordion we bought that day (and it really works!). I bet a lot of you reading this right now have your own memories of that first visit to the Vermont Country Store. And if you haven’t had the chance yet, this Saturday is the perfect time to stop by!
Festivities begin with a parade, followed by an afternoon of classic games, local vendors and crafters, food trucks, a beer tent from Mount Holly Brewery, horse-and-wagon rides, a petting zoo, live music, and street dancing on the Village Green. Everyone is welcome to enter the fair competitions, with categories including floral arrangements, apple desserts, pickled items, chocolate chip cookies, and creative kids’ crafts. Admission is free, with tickets available for food and games.

The Vermont Country Store

The Vermont Country Store is the iconic family-owned Vermont retailer founded by Vrest and Mildred Orton in 1946 and now celebrating its 80th anniversary. Today, the Orton family continues the tradition through its stores in Weston and Rockingham, its nationally distributed catalog and online store, serving generations of customers across the U.S. The Vermont Country Store continues to evolve while preserving elements of the past, from favorite Vermont classics like maple syrup, maple candy, and Vermont cheese to restoring discontinued and hard-to-find brands. The Vermont Country Store is the sponsor of the first annual Weston Village Fair & Jubilee.
